ABOUT US
The International Experts in Decorative Liquid Metal Coatings
Proudly created and manufactured in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Metalier Coatings are a sprayable liquid metal system which can make any substrate look like solid metal.
They are cost-effective, durable and beautiful. Use them instead of metallic paint, chrome spray finishes, powder coating, metal paint, chrome paint, sheet metal and Corten steel. Our liquid metal coatings can be applied to any surface, even the unexpected ones.
Metalier’s liquid metal coatings are suitable for indoors and outside. They offer a seamless liquid metal coating solution. This allows a light-weight, real metal finish to be applied over complex surfaces.
who we are
Metalier Coatings opened its New Zealand doors in 2005. We are now a global brand and a global purveyor of our exciting and fntastic liquid metal coating systems.
And we have such fun. Learn the hows and whys of Metalier.
OUR INSPIRATION
Our team established the Metalier business in 2005. We began life as applicators for another brand. We weren’t happy with the results and thought – there must be a better way of doing this.
And there is – and we have created it.
WE LOVE METAL, WE LOVE GREAT DESIGN AND WE LOVE HAVING FUN
What we do transforms the simple, cheap, boring and mundane into sumptuous, glorious and simply gorgeous real metal. It is so exciting to see the results of our work of transformation. We love it and we always get a buzz when a finish turns out even better than we have imagined. And the thrill of seeing patinas bloom before our eyes never fades.
OUR WORK IS FUN AND IT’S CREATIVE AND IT’S HANDS-ON
Because we are applicators as well as manufacturers we are constantly working on new cool and clever ways of creating new finishes and colours and stretching our product to its limits and beyond.
WE ARE PROUDLY BASED IN AOTEAROANEW ZEALAND
We live and breathe our product and we learn more about it every day. And we are so excited by it that we want to share that with everyone else around the world. So far we have devotees, both distributors and applicators in the UK, the USA, India, Australia, Belgium, Brunei, Russia and Vietnam.
And every day the in-box in our computers is full of emails from all over the world – from new companies and people who want to be part of the Metalier journey. It is so stimulating as each day brings new challenges (which is how we grow) and new openings and opportunities.
WHAT IS METALIER ?
It is a decorative metal coating which is for interior and exterior applications.
Metalier is a cold-spray composite decorative metal coating that allows you to make any substrate look as though it is solid metal. It is a metal finish, like a veneer, which has two main ingredients – the binders and the metals.
There are also important extras – patina, waxes, polishes and nano clear coat. Take a look at our video to see the process.
Metalier’s decorative metal coating system contains two major components:
- First is the binder.
- Second is the metals.
- Extras
FIRST IS THE BINDER
The special ingredients it contains are the result of years of research and development which is ongoing. Without Metalier’s special binders you do not have the Metalier Coatings and its decorative metal system.
There is a choice of 3 binders:
- Solvent-based binder
- Water-based binder
- Flexible water-based binder
Each of the three formulations has its own particular applications and benefits. Which one is right to use will depend on the substrate and whether the surface is horizontal or vertical. Each binder has its own page on this site so you can find out more about the properties of each one.
SECOND IS THE METALS
The Metalier decorative metal system is available in the following metals:
- Aluminium
- Brass (Gold And Green)
- Bronze (Regular, Smoky, Chocolate, Oil-rubbed And Gunmetal)
- Copper (Dark, Salmon, Black And Dusky)Iron (Rust)
- Nickel Silver And Gunmetal Silver
- Gold (Champagne, Classic And Rose)
and an infinity of other shades which are mixed by applicators to our formulation or yours
EXTRAS
The extras are also important to the Metalier metal finishes system.
You wouldn’t be able to create our textures without the thickener and you certainly need thinner and Hot Weather Retardant (for the water-based system) in warmer climates. We have also created our own range of patinas and have imported into the range a Metal Nano Coat to seal the metal finishes and prevent oxidisation.
Metalier decorative metal system offers many benefits. Here are some:
- Offers excellent surface protection and dramatic visual appeal.
- Allows a light-weight, real metal finish to be cost-effectively applied over complex surfaces.
- Offers a seamless metal coating solution.
- Presents a variety of surface textures.
- Has a high metal content resulting in an extremely strong, durable metal coating.
- Gives a high level of surface protection when used in conjunction with primers and sealers.
- Is highly resistant to knocks, cracking and peeling.
- Does not shrink after application. Will not support a flame.
- Does not conduct electricity and is non-galvanic.
- All metal finishes, except iron, are non-magnetic.
- Creates a final product that is waterproof and UV resistant.
ENVIRONMENT
METALIER IS ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY
Being environmentally friendly is a vital part of Metalier’s vision. The Metalier Coatings System consists of powdered metals and one of three binders which are solvent-based, water-based and flexible water-based.
Metalier’s System and its metalizing techniques promote a healthier environment, cleaner air and water, and the conservation of natural resources.
The Metalier System is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to solid cast foundry pieces as well as an alternative to metallic paints, coatings and finishes. The Metalier metalizing process reduces VOC’s, disposable liquid waste, consumption of natural resources and consumption of energy.
When compared with the environmental issues of foundries, plating, coatings or other paint materials, the Metalier System is a compelling alternative. Vapour exposure to the environment and to the applicator is limited.
Even the solvent binder system contains less than half the VOC’s of many water-based coatings which, in addition, may require multiple coats to achieve good coverage. In most cases only one coat of the Metalier System is required.
The predominant component in the Metalier System is real metal so in its liquid state the amount of vapour is limited. This is because the material is between 50 and 90% solid or non-volatile material depending on the application.
The Metalier System uses a quick, efficient cold application process and therefore produces no burn pollution. Foundries burn resources.
USE
FOR ARCHITECTS AND DESIGNERS
Architects and Designers, Boat Builders and Landscape Architects use Metalier metals inside and out.
Architects and designers, you can apply our metal coatings on virtually any substrate and create a beautiful, durable, genuine metal finish. No one will know, unless you tell them, that it is a fine metal coating rather than solid sheet or cast metal.
Metalier metal finishes are “metal as art” as Auckland designer David Ponting has said.
With so many options available and new ones being created all the time, Metalier metal finishes gives Architects and Designers the opportunity to make a significant artistic statement. Metalier metal coatings can be used in the following situations and locations.
- Hospitality fit-outs: Bars, cafes, hotels, nightclubs, restaurants.
- Commercial fit-outs: Lifts, foyers, offices, reception areas.
- Retail fit-outs: Arcades, malls, shops.
- Marine fit-outs: Boats, launches, super-yachts.
- Aeronautical fit-outs: Private jets.
- Domestic fit-outs: Holiday homes, private residences, palaces
POPULAR OUTDOOR USES
- Gates and fences.
- Swimming pool surrounds.
- Water features, garden art, sculpture.
- Tiles, doors, louvres. Chimney surrounds.
- Light fittings and switches.

The only things that can’t be coated with our metal coatings are things like waxed surfaces where you can’t create a key. And we can’t coat people either which, on the whole, we think is rather a good thing.
