HISTORY

Almost eighty years ago, in 1941, Johannes and Theresa Baulmann founded the lamp shade production Johann & Th. Baulmann in Sundern. Just six years later, in 1947, the production of lampshades was expanded to include metalworking.

The son Johannes Baulmann took over the management in the second generation. The warehouse was enlarged and production was integrated into a new company complex. From then on, the company was based in the Selscheder Weg in Sundern. From 1978 onwards Johannes Baulmann junior took over the management in third generation.

The production grew, the company was restructured and extended by office and administration buildings. With the conversion to CAD/CAM-controlled production, the export business expanded and a new focus was placed on the design of luminaires.

This raised the development of individual lighting concepts and systems to a new level of quality. Alexander Baulmann entered the family business in 2007. He joined his father as co-managing director in 2013.

Since 2016, Alexander Baulmann has been running the business on his own. He sees his task in continuing the tradition of high-quality luminaires in the 4th generation in such a way, that innovations like the digital transformation opens up opportunities for the company to penetrate even deeper into international markets.

PROJECTS

HOTEL

Hotels combine two living spaces in one building: public and private space. Public (or breakout) areas such as receptions, lobbies, corridor area’s, conference and banquet areas contrast with the hotel guestrooms need to privacy.

Interior designers and lighting designers work closely to unite these areas by designing-in features and free-flowing areas that are often defined by a coherent lighting design that creates varying light levels and effects. For each area, Baulmann can offer a raft of different decorative lighting products, from large custom made public area lights and feature pendant lights to a wide compliment of guestroom designs that meet all design tastes.

LOBBY

A hotel (or office) lobby is the heart of the building and offers the visitor the first impression, a glimpse of what is to come. As a result, it must be welcoming and thoughtfully illuminated, and the custom lighting concepts Baulmann create are perfect for this application.

Hotel foyers should be creatively segmented using lighting as a subliminal guide, thoughtfully taking you through the process of arrival to your guestroom, bar or restaurant. Each area creates a certain atmosphere and so requires specific lighting and design to meet this need, something Baulmann are very experienced in achieving.

SPA

For lighting specialists such as Baulmann, a spa is always an interesting challenge. To design and integrate lighting that catches the reflections created by rippling water in a pool or bath requires a great understanding of how to utilise the latest lighting technologies.

In environments where extreme temperature fluctuations and humidity have to be taken into account, Baulmann proves once again, their competence and knowledge when it comes to modern lighting design solutions. If the aim is to create an ambience of its own, this lighting manufacturer from the “Sauerland” region knows too well the challenges of creating good lighting for spa areas.

CONFERENCE

Equipping conference rooms with the correct light levels is an important part of the Baulmann luminaire portfolio. Controllable, dimmable luminaires are needed in rooms without natural daylight, and as such this technology is used on a daily basis.

Modern presentation techniques – using monitors and electronic whiteboards – pose their own problems and pose specific lighting design needs. Baulmann has extensive experience in this area and has many innovative light solutions, especially when it comes to (uncomplicated) and simple implementation of individual requirements.

GASTRONOMY

Due to decades of experience in creating lighting concepts for restaurants, bistros and bars, Baulmann have become a connoisseur and knowledgeable specialist in the area of restaurant lighting design.

Good illumination benefits on a psychologically level, and a good lighting scheme will make you feel welcomed, and stimulate the mind by enhancing the colours of the food and beverages on offer, working in unison with the palate to enhance the experience. Lighting contributes greatly to this ambience, and by choosing the correct type of light can define a feeling of intimacy in smaller spaces, or create a grand, open feeling by utilising larger key pieces such as contemporary chandeliers.

SHIPS

Cruise ships are an all-round project for interior designers, product designers and lighting designers. On board a ship it is necessary to cover all the requirements of a typical hotel and much, much more.

Baulmann has a wealth of experience and a wide range of products to bring all key areas together, from recessed downlights to wall luminaires, making the cabins and corridors comfortable and welcoming, to lavish public area lights set over grand staircases. We also have to consider the corrosive nature of the environment and constant motion of the luxury cruise liners and smaller passenger ships, meaning lighting has to be designed in such a way as to protect all the component parts that make up the light from the forces of nature.

RETAIL

Lighting design in a shop has two functions: Orientation and the creation of an experience. To combine these two tasks seamlessly requires professional planning by an interior designer and focused dialogue with a lighting designer who is experienced with retail design and, of the retailer itself.

Sophisticated lighting concepts are needed to highlight individual objects, dramatically staging them as crowd-pullers or to discreetly illuminate a showcase. A spotlight perfectly sets an accent, whilst in contrast, a modern pendant luminaire will create a bright and friendly atmosphere and open up spaces to create areas of interest during the shopping experience.

RETIREMENT HOMES

Baulmann offers lighting concepts for retirement and care homes that is age-appropriate. Visual comfort, glare-free illumination and a clear indication of steps and barriers are a basic requirement when designing for care homes.

Higher lighting levels, as well as a greater proportion of indirect light in general lighting, is crucial when preparing lighting concepts for the different areas (and needs) of a retirement home.
